Re:Nylon

Prada has always utilized nylon as a main material. The brand's '84 debut of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line garnered the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, ready-for-hypebeast line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The renowned Milan-based house has reinvented its iconic nylon bags by turning them into eco-friendly re:Nylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic styles - one belt bag (pictured) as well as a shoulder bag (pictured) and a tote bag (pictured) and a duffle bag (pictured), and two backpacks - made of repurposed ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.

The repurposed fabric is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer that makes Econyl fabric from recycled nylon waste that can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger plan to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the collection also includes a pair of boots and shoes constructed from recycled ECONYL, as well as an assortment of clothing made from the same fabrication.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to create a series of videos called "What We Carry" that shows the cutting-edge process that goes into creating its Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling facility in Arizona that converts old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the switch to re:Nylon, Prada is achieving its most significant reduction in virgin nylon use yet, saving 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. The move will also cut the carbon emissions of the company by around 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability initiative from the brand that recently went fur-free in its clothing and accessories, a move applauded by both animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.

Recycled Nylon

While it may be better for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon has its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and will remain in landfills or the oceans until it is broken into smaller pieces that could harm wildlife. It is also not breathable and is able to shed microplastics once washed. It consumes 50 percent less energy than regular virgin nylon, and is also more durable.

The fabric is made of recycled plastics and petroleum, which comes from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources, and also the carbon emissions that come from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also more manageable than other bag materials because it doesn't have to be dyed and weaved. This makes it an ideal option for bags that are going to be used often, such as gym and yoga gear.

In addition to its environmental benefits, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible material than conventional polyester or cotton. It can also withstand a great deal of abuse, which makes it a great choice for backpacks and outdoor equipment. It is also lightweight and can easily be shaped and stitched into the shape you want for backpacks. Nylon is a great choice for outdoor gear as it is waterproof and doesn't take in mildew or odors as readily as other fabrics.

If you are looking for bags that are sustainable, look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification is a test for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. Be sure to look for brands that have this certification since they are more likely to be more transparent and accountable when it comes to their products.

Patagonia is a good example. It offers a range of yoga equipment and backpacks made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. This nylon is produced in a closed loop process that consumes 50 percent less energy than virgin nylon. Moreover, the brand supports organizations working to protect our planet.
